An important die connection
Lot 1117
Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 2.79 g, 10 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'S P Q R Group'. PACI P R Clasped right hands holding winged caduceus together. Rev. S P Q R within oak wreath. BMC -. CG 100.1 (this coin). Cohen -. Martin -. Nicolas -. RIC -. Apparently unique and unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. Slightly rough and the obverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, ex CGB 59, 19 June 2013, 341.

What makes this coin particularly interesting is that it was struck from the same reverse die as lot 1100 above. This not only connects the SALVS GENERIS HVMANI type to the PACI P R issue, but it also attests the concurrent use of dies for both plated and solid silver coins. Furthermore, the obverse type with the clasped hands holding a caduceus links the coin to lot 1122 below and thus provides a connection to the 'SIGNA P R Group'. The type is originally derived from Spanish prototypes (see lots 1023-1024 above).
